One of the most important leadership skills is creating a plan and leading a team to achieve it by continuously revisiting and following up on agreed actions. That was one area I wanted to grow in as president. I learned that everyone needs to contribute, and the plan should be broken into actionable items, with regular meetings at least once a month and consistent follow-up, which can help grow you as a leader.

My greatest hope was to grow our club. We started with 9 members and aimed to become more stable in membership. We set a goal of 15 members and currently have 14, with one new member pending payment. The main reason for this success was setting a realistic goal that every member believed was achievable, and having a great team of club officers dedicated to their roles. By everyone doing their part, we achieved strong results as a team.

Dos: Set an example. Be as active as anybody else if you expect members to deliver speeches and stay engaged. Do have a clear plan and calendar from the beginning of your term, and do meet your team regularly.

Don’ts: Don’t meet too often or hold overly long meetings; respect officers’ time. Don’t be negative toward your ExCo members; be supportive and help them grow. Don’t be dominating; let everyone participate and take ownership. You have a seven-member team for a reason, and everybody brings valuable ideas to the table.
