When I became president, my goal was simple: to lead by understanding team dynamics. Although I had formal leadership experience at work, club leadership demanded different skills—emotional listening, gentle persistence, and creative motivation.

Lucy Toastmasters began seven years ago as a corporate club. When office sponsorship ended, membership fell and the club began to fade. My immediate priority was survival: keep meetings lively, consistent, and welcoming so members would return and guests would stay. I contacted our club coach; whose guidance improved our visibility and encouraged members from sister clubs to attend. Those visitors brought renewed energy and fresh ideas.

I set a modest recruitment target for four new members. With focused effort and coach support, we achieved half of that goal and welcomed two new members, a meaningful step toward recovery.

My leadership 'dos' are steady follow-up with the Executive Committee of the club, active listening to members’ ideas, and supporting practical implementation. I make room for everyone’s voice and celebrate small wins. My firm “don’ts’ are allowing negative energy to take root—pessimism spreads quickly—and missing club sessions except for dire necessity.

Leading Lucy has been a lesson in perseverance, humility, and teamwork. These qualities, more than tactics or titles, are the engines that revive and sustain a club. I remain committed to nurturing them as we grow together.

PUBLIC SPEAKING TIP
"You can have technique, polish, and talent, yet still fail to land your ideas if your mindset is not right. A critical thinking mindset determines how you connect with your audience. It is the difference that makes the difference in your presence."
