Imperial Toastmasters Club

  • Established year: 1998
  • Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
  • Number of Members: 26
  • Club President: Nuhamin Thomas

When I became President of Imperial Toastmasters Club, my main intention was to learn how to lead a club effectively while maintaining quality meetings, strong member engagement, and a positive club culture. Having served in other leadership roles before, this was my first experience leading as President. I wanted to build on the work of previous leaders, identify areas for improvement, and leave the club stronger than I found it. Through the role, I learned that leadership is less about directing people and more about supporting them, listening to different perspectives, and creating an environment where others can succeed.

My goal was to ensure that members not only remained active but genuinely looked forward to attending meetings and growing through Toastmasters. I believe we achieved much of that goal, with over 70% of what we set out to accomplish becoming a reality. Our successes were driven by teamwork, open communication, and the willingness of officers and members to support one another, especially when some of us were unavailable. Our biggest challenge was maintaining consistent participation from all members.

If I were to serve another term, my top three leadership dos would be: communicate openly, delegate effectively, and hold regular executive meetings. My top three don’ts would be: take challenges personally, delay building support systems and assistants for key roles, and try to carry responsibilities alone instead of seeking help from the team.

PUBLIC SPEAKING TIP
"Preparation is discipline, and discipline is respect for the audience, the craft, and yourself. Instead of waiting for motivation, effective leaders build routines and choose consistency over convenience. They prepare and improve even when no one is watching."
