Representing Area 18 of Division D from Dar Toastmasters Club
Recently visited Addis Ababa to represent Area 18 and my club at the Division D Conference, making it an important trip both professionally and personally. Coming from Dar es Salaam, I needed time to acclimatize to the city’s high altitude of 2,355 meters above sea level. Staying hydrated, taking light walks, and pacing myself helped me adjust to the thinner air, allowing me to enjoy both the conference and the activities I had planned.
One of my first stops was Friendship Park, a peaceful green space in the heart of the city. The park is perfect for a leisurely stroll or simply soaking in the views of Addis Ababa’s skyline. The clean paths, sculptures, and well-maintained gardens offered a serene start to my journey.
Next, I explored Entoto Park, where I hiked the mountain trails surrounding the city. The trails were refreshing and offered breathtaking views of the city that made the climb worth every step. The fresh mountain air, tall eucalyptus trees, and expansive views made the effort worthwhile, fulfilling one of my 2026 personal goals of challenging myself physically while enjoying nature.
For a cultural and culinary experience, I visited Totot Restaurant with TM Atul Sankar. There, we enjoyed traditional Ethiopian dishes and witnessed lively traditional dances, which added color and rhythm to our meal. The combination of food, music, and dance made it a deeply immersive experience, highlighting Ethiopia’s rich heritage.
In the evenings, I also enjoyed a walk through Meskel Square and nearby areas with TM Samantha. The lively streets, lights, and local activity offered a glimpse of Addis Ababa’s nightlife, showing a side of the city that contrasts beautifully with its tranquil parks.
Beyond these spots, Addis Ababa has so much more to offer. Visitors can explore Unity Park, which celebrates Ethiopia’s history and cultural diversity, or immerse themselves in history at the National Museum of Ethiopia and Holy Trinity Cathedral. The bustling Mercato, one of Africa’s largest open-air markets, offers spices, crafts, and souvenirs, while traditional coffee ceremonies and live music performances provide rich cultural experiences. For nature enthusiasts, light hikes, monastery visits, and other parks add further adventure and reflection opportunities.
Visiting Addis Ababa was a journey of personal growth, cultural immersion, and building connections. From representing my club & Area to hiking mountains, enjoying traditional cuisine and dances, and experiencing the city’s nightlife, the trip was full of experiences that challenged me, delighted me, and most importantly, allowed me to build meaningful friendships and memories that will last long after my visit.
