Serving as the Division D Director has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my Toastmasters journey. It has been an incredible privilege to serve Tanzania, my home country, alongside Ethiopia and the online clubs based in Kenya. Looking back, I feel immense gratitude for the opportunity to lead, learn, and grow with such a diverse and talented community.
One of the greatest gifts of this role was the exposure to different cultures, perspectives, and ways of thinking. From the vibrant clubs of Tanzania to the passionate members in Ethiopia and the dynamic online communities in Kenya, every interaction taught me something new. Leadership became more than managing activities and achieving goals—it became about understanding people.
This journey taught me patience. Not everything goes according to plan. Projects face challenges, expectations differ, and obstacles emerge when least expected. Yet leadership requires resilience—the ability to stay focused on the destination even when the road becomes difficult. I learned that success is not about having a perfect plan but about adapting, persevering, and continuing to move forward.
I also learned valuable lessons in people management. Every member, club officer, Area Director, and leader brings unique strengths, motivations, and aspirations. Understanding how to work with diverse personalities and inspire collective action was one of the most important leadership lessons I gained throughout the year.
Together, we achieved many memorable milestones. We successfully conducted Club Officer Trainings across countries, strengthening leadership capacity throughout Division D. We also organized the Division D Conference in Ethiopia, which brought members together for learning, networking, and celebration. These accomplishments were only possible because of the dedication and teamwork of countless volunteers who believed in our shared vision.
As I reflect on this journey, I remember the many moments we shared. We laughed together, we led together, we learned together, and at times we even disagreed and fought for what we believed was best. Through it all, we grew stronger—not just as leaders, but as a family united by the Toastmasters mission.
I am especially grateful to my incredible team. Their support, commitment, and willingness to serve made every success possible. Leadership is never a solo journey. Behind every achievement stands a team of dedicated individuals who contribute their time, energy, and passion.
Perhaps the most profound lesson I learned is that leadership is ultimately about self-leadership. A Division Director must be self-directed, self-driven, and independent. There are moments when decisions must be made, challenges must be faced, and motivation must come from within. Leadership begins with taking responsibility for your own growth and actions.
As the saying goes, "Experience is worth a ton of theory." Books, seminars, and training programs provide valuable knowledge, but nothing compares to the lessons learned through real-world leadership. This year gave me experiences that no classroom could teach.
As I conclude my term, I carry forward not only memories and achievements but also friendships, lessons, and a deeper appreciation for servant leadership. It has been an honor to serve Division D, and I will forever cherish the opportunity to have worked alongside so many remarkable Toastmasters across Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Kenya.
