The Purple Cow and Why It Matters Today
The book Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable by Seth Godin shares a simple but powerful idea about standing out. The author gives a very interesting example. Imagine you live in the city and one day you drive past a farm full of cows. At first, it looks amazing because you don’t see cows every day. But if you pass that same farm again and again, the cows slowly become ordinary. After some time, you don’t even notice them anymore.
Now imagine something different. Imagine that among all those normal cows, there is one purple cow. Suddenly, you would stop and look. You would probably take a picture and tell your friends about it. Why? Because it is different. It stands out. This is the main idea of the book.
According to Seth, traditional advertising is no longer enough to make people notice you. Instead of trying to advertise an ordinary product, companies need to create something remarkable like a purple cow.
From Product to Person
A “purple cow” represents a product, service, or idea that is unique and worth talking about. This idea made me think about something else. We are also like products in many ways. In our careers and in life, we need to know how to present ourselves and stand out. We need to know how to communicate clearly in meetings, how to deliver social speeches, and how to give a strong elevator pitch. We also need the confidence to express our ideas under pressure. This is where Toastmasters becomes very important.
Toastmasters International gives us a place to practice and improve our communication and leadership skills. It helps us polish our speaking abilities and build confidence. Through practice and feedback, we slowly become the best version of ourselves. We become a purple cow.
Your Own Purple Cow
In a highly competitive world, it is not enough to be ordinary. We must develop our skills, improve our communication, and present ourselves with confidence. In other words, we must work on becoming our own purple cow.
